Our Story

Who We Are, Where We’ve Been, and Where We’re Headed:

Our story begins in 1994. Michael was two years old, with not yet a thought of home improvement in his burgeoning little mind. Josiah, you might say, was still under development, yet to be born. We must begin our story here because this was the year Coghlan Painting, started by Michael’s father, Pat, evolved from a small window-cleaning operation into an equally small painting company. More people in Pat’s circle seemed to be interested in hiring a house painter than a window cleaner, and the business followed the demand. From that point forward, through the late 2010s, this would become the theme of what eventually grew into Coghlan Enterprises.

Pat would simply adjust the scope of his business to meet one new demand after another. Meanwhile, Josiah and Michael would spend their entire childhoods together, growing up in the same neighborhood and playing on the same soccer teams—some of which their dads coached. They would eventually become college roommates and spend their summers working for Pat.

After university, Josiah apprenticed with a custom cabinetmaker, while Michael returned to his father’s business to help build it out further. Feeling disillusioned with trim carpentry but not quite ready to start a business of his own, Michael took up tiling in an effort to move into bathroom remodeling. As providence would have it, around that same time, Josiah moved back to the Williamsburg area, eager to strike out on his own with his newly acquired cabinetmaking skills. It only seemed natural for the two of them to join forces.

Michael and Josiah started what would become Cedar Creek Building and Design in Pat’s garage in 2021, and the rest is history. As of August 2026, Cedar Creek has grown to eight employees, all salt-of-the-earth people and experts in their craft who are essential to what makes the business what it is today. We primarily offer kitchen remodeling, including cabinet refinishing, bathroom remodeling, and light new construction, while staying true to our motto of making things “by hand and from the heart.” We are, and always will be, a family-oriented and faith-forward company, trusting in the Lord, committing our work to Him, and loving our neighbors. As for where we’re going, we’re taking it one day at a time, with the hope that your neighborhood and perhaps even your home will soon become part of our story. We promise to leave it better than we found it.
